Scratched Eye

A scratched eye, or corneal abrasion, is a scratch on the clear surface at the front of the eye. Most heal within a few days, but an eye doctor should check it, because a scratch can become infected. At Modo Optometry in Marina del Rey, a scratched eye is seen the same day during business hours, seven days a week. Call (310) 305-2950 first.

What Is a Scratched Eye?

A scratched eye usually means a corneal abrasion: a scratch or scrape on the cornea, the clear window over the colored part of the eye and the pupil. The scratch is in the cornea's outer layer of cells. A fingernail, a makeup brush, a tree branch, or the edge of a sheet of paper can do it in a second.

Corneal scratches hurt far more than their size suggests. The cornea is packed with pain-sensing nerves, far more densely than skin, so even a tiny scratch can hurt a lot and set the eye watering.

A scratch on the white of the eye is a different injury. It can leave a spot of blood, a visible line, or general redness, and it tends to be less severe. A scratch on the cornea is the one that can blur vision, and left untreated it can become infected and turn into a corneal ulcer. That is why it is worth having an eye doctor look.

Common Causes of a Scratched Eye

Fingernails

One of the most common causes, including a baby's or a child's fingernails. Keeping a child's nails clipped short lowers the risk.

Branches and Yard Work

Tree branches, plant matter, and flying debris while mowing or trimming. A scratch from living material such as a branch or a fingernail carries a risk of fungal infection, which may not show up right away.

Dust, Sand, Wood, and Metal

Particles that blow into the eye, or that fly off tools while grinding, sawing, or hammering. A particle can also lodge under the upper lid and scratch the cornea with every blink.

Contact Lenses

Lenses with a rough or torn edge, lenses that do not fit well, lenses worn while the eyes are dry, or too much force putting them in or taking them out. Grit trapped under a lens can scratch as well.

Makeup Brushes and Applicators

A mascara wand or brush that slips is a frequent cause. Paying attention while applying eye makeup helps prevent it.

Rubbing and Dry Eyes

Rubbing the eyes hard or often can scratch the cornea, and so can very dry eyes. Very dry eyes also raise the risk of corneal erosion, where the surface layer loosens again after it has healed.

Symptoms of a Scratched Eye

Some people feel it the moment it happens. For others the symptoms show up, or get stronger, a few hours later.

  • Eye pain, anywhere from a mild ache to sharp, stabbing pain
  • A feeling that something is still stuck in the eye
  • Tearing and watering that will not stop
  • Redness in the white of the eye
  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • A headache
  • Swollen eyelids

How a Scratched Eye Is Diagnosed

1

Your History

What you were doing when it happened, what hit the eye, when the pain started, and whether you wear contact lenses.

2

Vision Check

Each eye is tested to see whether the scratch has affected your vision.

3

Slit Lamp and Dye

The doctor examines the cornea under bright light and magnification. A drop of yellow dye collects wherever the surface is broken, and under blue light it shows the size and depth of the scratch. The doctor also looks for a particle that may still be hiding in the eye.

4

Treatment and Recheck

Any particle still in the eye is removed. You leave with drops or an ointment if you need them, written instructions, and a date to have the eye checked again, because the eye can look fine and not be.

Treatment and When to See an Eye Doctor

Treatment Options for a Scratched Eye

Treatment Options for a Scratched Eye

Treatment depends on what the exam finds. Most corneal scratches heal within a few days, and larger ones take longer. An eye doctor often prescribes antibiotic eye drops or ointment to keep the scratch from becoming infected, and lubricating drops can ease the discomfort during healing. Check with your eye doctor before using any drop at all. No drugstore drop is made to heal a scratch, and whitening drops can sting a scratched eye without making it heal any faster. Leave contact lenses out until the eye has healed and your eye doctor says when you can wear them again. Sunglasses help if light bothers the eye.

When to See an Eye Doctor

When to See an Eye Doctor

Any scratch on the cornea is worth an exam, ideally the same day. If the eye gets worse, or is still bothering you past the point your eye doctor said it should settle, call back. Pain that returns after the eye seemed to heal, often on waking, needs a prompt visit too. Go to the emergency room first if something has cut or punctured the eye, an object is stuck in it, a chemical has splashed into it (rinse with clean water first, then go), your vision drops suddenly, or the pain is severe. The office is closed after hours, so for those signs at night, an urgent care center or emergency room is the place to go.

Insurance for a Scratched Eye Visit

A visit for a scratched eye is a medical visit. It bills to your medical insurance, not to a vision plan, with that plan's copay and possibly a deductible. Vision plans cover routine exams and eyewear only.

I've been coming here for years, and I definitely recommend it. Friendly, helpful staff. Good docs. Great selection of really fun frames, but mostly on the higher-end price range. They've got a good variety. Free, easy parking. Tons of good other stores and food nearby.

So I’m new to town and just a couple weeks ago I accidentally popped the lenses out my boyfriend’s glasses and wanted help but didn’t know where to go. I popped in assuming I was cooked but then Armin Rafiee helped me out and not only quickly fixed it but re-adjusted the frame to fit snugly again. Top notch service and I felt so much better on the way out. Very nice place and people.
